Nowadays and depending on where you live, finding a job can really be a long and difficult challenge. There are ways to help you in your quest though. Although this is by no means an exhaustive list of things to do, the tips mentioned below should get you  a new job sooner than later.

1- Know Yourself!

The first step is to put on paper what you want to do, what job, why. Then you need to write down your skills, your experience, your weaknesses and strengths and see if there is any gaps between what you need in order to get your dream job and what you have. The more details you use, the better. You will then have a good understanding of what you offer and will be able to match it to the requirements of the job you want.

2- Customise your CV and Cover Letter.

Now that you know what you want and what you offer, you will rewrite your CV. Always remember that you are selling your skills and experience to potential employers. Your CV must demonstrate very quickly that you have what they are looking for. To make sure your CV includes the right information, read job adverts you are interested in and write down the skills, experience and behavioural traits they mention. You should then make sure they are visible in your CV.

To make your CV even more appealing to recruiters, write a summary of your skills and achievements at the top of your CV, to create an introduction.

Your Cover Letter should also be adapted to each job advert you reply to. Make sure to include the job title and the name of the company if you know it. Repeat the words used in the advert to demonstrate in your cover letter that you have what they need. The cover letter will attract the attention of the recruiter, your CV will demonstrate and prove that you have what you said in the cover letter.

3- Organise and Plan.

Spend time organising yourself. Create a planning for the next 30 days and for each day. In this planning, you should insert all the activities you think are necessary. They will include:

- Job adverts search – read job email alerts, read online job adverts, read newspapers.

- Registering to online job sites

- Checking and using Social Networks like LinkedIn

- Registering with recruitment agencies

- Writing replies and sending applications

- Following up on applications

4- Act!

Time for action, follow your daily tasks and send those CVs! Every day, you need to implement your action plan. At the end of each one, review your actions and prepare for the next day. Review rejected applications and learn from them. Continue to customise and adapt your CV and cover letter. Send more and more, but only to targeted adverts.

5- Prepare for your Interviews.

You are invited to a job interview? Great! Time to prepare now. Read the job advert once more time, learn about the company (on their website and on the internet), gather information about the people who will interview you (use LinkedIn).

It is also important to review your CV and summarise it in your head together with your work history, education and achievements. Practice questions/answers with someone else. Write down questions you will want to ask about the company and the job at the interview. By now, you should be able to tell anyone why you are the right person for that job in less than 5 minutes.

Print any document that you need. Make sure you know where to go and how.

6- Become a Job Interview Expert.

With practice, you will become more and more confident at interviews. You will anticipate questions they will ask, you will answer quickly and without hesitation, you will show that you can start the job tomorrow.

At the end of each interview, do not forget to ask about the next steps and do not be afraid to ask the interviewer about how far you are from their perfect candidate. it will give you an idea of your chances to get the job and most importantly, it will give you an opportunity to answer any reservation that they may have.

7- Follow-up.

Follow-up after each interview with your recruitment agent or the recruiting company directly. Send an email to thank them and let them know that you are interested in the job.

8- Follow Your Plan Until Success.

Continue to implement your daily plan and soon you will get that dream job!
